About Sukhna Lake

Sukhna Lake is a man-made reservoir located in Chandigarh, India, at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills. It spans an area of approximately 3 square kilometers and is a popular spot for locals and tourists for walking, jogging, boating, and bird-watching. The lake provides a peaceful retreat from city life and is an important ecological and recreational landmark of Chandigarh.

History & Significance

Sukhna Lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream originating from the Shivalik Hills. The famous French architect Le Corbusier, who designed the city of Chandigarh, played a significant role in planning the surrounding areas, ensuring the lake complemented the city’s overall layout. The lake was initially built to act as a water reservoir and also to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal. Over the years, Sukhna Lake has become a hub for leisure activities and hosts various events, attracting nature lovers, photographers, and fitness enthusiasts alike.
